Plants, Classes & Sundries

Fall is in the air! That means autumnal decor and time to begin planting again.

Gather with us Saturday, October 5th from 2:00 PM to 7:30 PM at The Portico in High Shoals to celebrate autumn.

The Classes

Gardening in the Shade - $5.00

Hillary Thompson (me) will give a presentation called "Shady Shrubs." I'll use pictures to teach you how to determine what type of shade you have (yes, there are many types) and go over some specific shrub options and other solutions. There will be a mini section on hydrangeas, because I can't help myself.

Cost is $5.00 and tickets can be reserved on this page. It will help us plan if you pre-register, but come anyway because tickets will be available at the door. The receipt we email you will serve as your ticket.

Fall Wreath Class - $55.00

Bonnie Vaughan, an expert flower farmer and florist, will hold a fall wreath class. I've been to her wreath classes three years in a row and brought home hefty, head-turning wreaths for my front door. She's so good at what she does that it's impossible not to love what you create.

Cost for wreath making class is $55 and includes snacks and wine. Class size is limited to 20 people, so register early right here! (Half sold out - 10 tickets remaining.) The receipt we email you will serve as your ticket.

The Makers

We will have our Plant Stand, same as last year, but we've added other makers and those two classes. There are no tickets needed to attend the stand, so bustle on over.

Pick out some locally grown and hand-made items to enjoy this fall. We've curated other growers and makers to bring their specialties:

  • cut flowers from Bonnie
  • plants - shrubs, shade garden plants, fall mums, houseplants in vintage McCoy pots
  • fall produce
  • crazy gourds and some pumpkins
  • luffa (or loofah - however you spell them, we'll have both)
  • jams (Christina's cherry jam will rock your tastebuds)
  • alpaca yarn, roving, and raw fleece, plus alpaca dryer balls and felted soap
  • Job's Tears beads - a bead harvested from a grass
  • acorns - adorable decorations made of felt and some that are wee floating candles
  • crafts
  • + more sundries we're creating and curating as we prepare for this day

The Portico

Located at 5822 Highway 186, Good Hope, GA 30641, The Portico is an historic church building on the right, just past the town of High Shoals. It's now a local event scene, run by my sister, Amy Barber, for concerts, weddings, birthday/retirement parties, and events like the High Shoals Harvest. It's a special place for a fun autumn afternoon.

Bonnie Vaughan & Red Dirt Road Farm

Bonnie is a cut flower farmer/florist cultivating 200-year-old family property on historic Elder Mill Road in Watkinsville. She regularly does bouquets for weddings, on top of seasonal wreath and bouquet-making classes. You can contact her directly at bonnie@reddirtroadfarm.com.
